Decades of Getting It Right.

Eastern Horticultural Services has been caring for properties across Chester County, the Brandywine Valley, the Main Line and Delaware since 2005. This is what twenty plus years of tending the same property looks like.

Eastern Horticultural Services started in 2005 with a clear idea: do the work right, take care of the property like it’s yours, and the relationships will follow. They have. Twenty-one years later, EHS is rooted in the shadow of Longwood in Kennett Square, working many of the same properties, running on the same principle.

What has changed is the range of what we do. The maintenance foundation, turf care, horticultural management, seasonal gardening programs, has always been the core. Over time, that foundation opened doors. Design and build projects. Hardscape and outdoor rooms. Historic properties that needed careful, knowledgeable hands. The properties got more complex. The team got deeper. EHS grew into the full range of work these landscape projects ask for.

In order to maintain design integrity, the people who plan the landscape projects are also there when it’s being built and maintained. That continuity is not a policy. It is just how the work gets done right.

We take you from start to finish every season.

The People Behind the Work

The expertise at EHS is not a department. It is the people: what they know, how long they have known it, and the fact that they are still here doing it.

John Winterbottom, co-founder and president of Eastern Horticultural Services, Kennett Square Pennsylvania

John Winterbottom

Co-Founder & President

John Winterbottom co-founded Eastern Horticultural Services in 2005 and has served as president ever since. He oversees business development and accounts, meaning he is typically the first conversation when a new client reaches out, and the person making sure the relationship is the right fit before any work begins. Twenty-one years in, he still manages his own accounts and knows his clients by name, by property, and by what they care about most.

PJ Walraven, co-founder and lead landscape designer at Eastern Horticultural Services, Pennsylvania

PJ Walraven

Co-Founder · Landscape Design & Turf Management

PJ Walraven co-founded EHS in 2005 and has led the company’s design and turf programs ever since. A Penn State graduate in Landscape Contracting, PJ has spent more than twenty-five years designing and managing landscapes on premier residential and commercial properties across Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. He is a state-licensed pesticide applicator in Pennsylvania and a member of the PA Turfgrass Council. When PJ designs a property, he already knows how it will look and perform in five years. That is not a coincidence.

Scott Hershbell, co-founder and operations partner at Eastern Horticultural Services, Kennett Square Pennsylvania

Scott Hershbell

Co-Founder · Operations & Equipment

Scott Hershbell co-founded EHS in 2005 and has run operations ever since. As the partner overseeing scheduling, logistics, and equipment, Scott is the reason the right crew and the right tools show up at the right property across every job EHS works on. It is an essential role and it is the reason a company this size can still operate with the dedicated precision.

In addition, Scott is an integral member of the design team producing forward thinking landscape concepts and maintenance plans.

Ann Waters, head horticulturalist at Eastern Horticultural Services, tending a rose garden in Chester County PA

Ann Waters

Head Horticulturalist

Ann Waters leads EHS’s Professional Gardening program, and her credentials are as specific as the work she does. A University of Delaware graduate, Ann completed Longwood Gardens’ rigorous two-year Professional Gardener Training Program, the same program that prepared her to work those grounds when EHS was called to Longwood in 2019. Twenty-six years in the field, with specialty positions at both private and public gardens. She still understands what a living garden needs before it asks.

Her knowledge extends to pruning techniques and overall plant healthcare instruction to every EHS team member.

In recent years, EHS has grown considerably, adding experienced staff, equipment, and depth of capability across design & build, masonry, and landscape installation. Every person who has joined this crew has come in knowing what kind of company this is.

The Right Team for the Right Properties.

If your property deserves the kind of attention that only comes from people who know this land and this work, we would like to talk.
